The History Trail of Bornheim

Bornheim Today - An award-winning, lovable community
The award can be taken literally. Illustration 1: a golden plaque for the proud Bornheim residents. When, at the beginning of the 1960s, at the initiative of Federal President Heinrich Lübke, the competition “Our village should become more beautiful” was launched, Bornheim took part from the very beginning. As early as 1967, Bornheim became district winner, in 1968 regional winner and won the silver medal at state level. In the further course of the competition, which is now called “Our village has a future,” Bornheim was awarded in 2012 in the main and special class. The most recent success for Bornheim: gold in the state competition in 2025, in which the municipality prevailed against 269 competitors and thus qualified for the federal competition.

With the economic upswing in the 20th century, Bornheim developed into a lovable community. Many projects were initiated and implemented. These include, on the one hand, the introduction of electricity from 1919 and the water supply from 1953. The necessary road construction work for this was still carried out entirely by hand. Today, the waterworks, with its complex decalcification technology, is up to date and supplies the municipalities of the Walsheim group with high-quality water. Electricity is indispensable in everyday life. With over 100 photovoltaic systems on the roofs, a large amount of electricity is now produced locally in Bornheim.
With the industrial area created in the 1960s south of the railway line and the settlement of the Hornbach company, the realization of further projects became easier. The village grew, first the Gartenstraße area, Wiesenstraße, then in Weppen, Hofgraben and Birkenstraße, and finally Krautgarten and Steinsteggewanne. The newest development area Hollergarten in the center of the village has been completed and the new village center is nearing completion.
The community center, built in 1982 and expanded in 2010, offers space for numerous events and gatherings for the citizens of Bornheim.
The sports hall completed in 2012 belongs to the Verbandsgemeinde Offenbach, but is mainly used by Bornheim clubs. Above all, by the sports club Bornheim, the home of the successful handball department and popular sports for numerous target groups from young to old.
In addition to the sports hall, the leisure center offers further sporting activities. Bowling, tennis, squash, badminton and mini-golf can be practiced here. For relaxation, there is an attached restaurant with a beer garden.
A tourist highlight is the Bornheim draisine railway on the disused railway line connecting Landau and Germersheim. It is well known far beyond Bornheim’s borders.
Guests who wish to stay longer in Bornheim can find accommodation in the guesthouses “Zur Weinlaube” and “Villa Toskana”, both run by the Sommerauer family. They are located directly in the vineyards and are known for their warm hospitality and good breakfast. The location is ideal as a starting point for hiking, cycling tours and excursions into the Palatinate Forest. The Czerwinski holiday apartment offers an option for self-catering.
The HZB, Hornbach Center Bornheim, supplies residents with most everyday necessities. The Hornbach DIY store with garden center is a craftsman’s dream. Groceries and drugstore items, shoes and clothing, children’s toys and a pharmacy leave hardly any wishes unfulfilled.
Since 2003, Bornheim has been a “nativity village” during Advent. At the suggestion of Bornheim resident Ulla Kaub, four to five nativity scenes were originally planned to create a festive atmosphere during a short walk. Over the years, this idea grew into well over 100 nativity scenes, which decorate courtyards, driveways and front gardens in a wide variety of styles, from classic to modern. During the Christmas season, Bornheim truly becomes a nativity village, and what begins as a short walk can easily turn into a three-hour tour.
One can only say: Bornheim saugut!
